Long ago, all stories belonged to Nyame, the Sky God. He kept them safe in a magnificent wooden chest in the heavens. Anansi the spider, a creature of restless wit, watched humans below, their lives often dull. He wanted those stories to become the wisest.

Anansi spun a thread all the way to Nyame. 'Great Sky God,' he puffed, 'I wish to buy your stories!' Nyame chuckled, a sound like distant thunder. 'Bring me Osebo the leopard, Mmoboro the hornets, and Moatia the fairy,' Nyame rumbled.

Anansi went after Osebo, the leopard with fearsome teeth. He dug a deep pit and covered it with leaves. Then, Anansi sang a sweet, mocking song, waiting for Osebo to approach.

Osebo tumbled into the pit with a furious yowl! Anansi lowered a rope. 'I'll help you, noble Osebo, but let me tie your legs for safety.' Osebo agreed, and soon found himself bound and helpless. Anansi took him to Nyame.

Next, Anansi found Mmoboro, the hornets, in their angry nest. He filled a calabash with water. He poured some on a leaf, then some on his head, muttering loudly about hornets not knowing when it was raining.

The hornets, insulted, swarmed into the dry calabash to prove they weren't stupid. Anansi quickly corked it, capturing the whole buzzing multitude. He then carried them to Nyame.

Finally, Anansi sought Moatia, the tiny, elusive fairy. He carved a wooden doll, coated it with sticky tree gum, and placed it by a path with delicious yams around it. Anansi then hid.

Soon, Moatia appeared, drawn by the yams. She reached for one, but her hand stuck fast to the doll! She hit it, then kicked it, and soon the tiny fairy was completely stuck. Anansi emerged with a sly smile.

Nyame was astonished. The small spider had done the impossible! True to his word, Nyame gave Anansi the magnificent wooden chest, now filled with all the stories. Anansi's heart swelled with pride.

As Anansi descended, his pride made him stumble. The chest slipped, its lid sprang open, and with a whoosh, the stories burst forth! They scattered like seeds on the wind, flying everywhere, filling the world with tales.
